Jesse Richman named AWSI Kiteboarder of the Year

For the second year in a row, Naish’s Jesse Richman has been voted AWSI’s “Kiteboarder of the Year”. This title is well earned, as Jesse has been on fire this year, taking every aspect of kiteboarding to the extreme.

Jesse Richman named AWSI Kiteboarder of the Year

“I’m stoked to be named AWSI Kiteboarder of the Year! Thanks to everyone that made this possible. We are taking this shiz to the next level!” – Jesse Richman

From kiting Jaws, ripping strapless in the waves, pulling world record stunts, to throwing the most engaged wakestyle moves, Jesse truly makes the most out of every moment…and there’s no end in sight. Considered the “waterman” of kiteboarding, Jesse now adds this title to his already stellar collection of titles such as 2x World Champion and 2013 RedBull King of the Air.

Naish is beyond stoked to have this remarkable character on our team, both on and off the water. We look forward to seeing what he has in store next…he definitely keeps everyone on their toes!

HUGE Congratulations Jesse!

World Kiteboard VW Beetle Kitesurf Saint Peter Ording Germany PKRA

Closing Ceremony of the Beetle Kitesurf WC

The final day of the PKRA Saint Peter Ording, Germany, brought another day of beautiful sun with thousands of kitesurfing fans coming to the Beetle Kitesurf World Cup.  The closing ceremony started at 16:00, with Marc Jacobs from New Zealand and Karolina Winkowska from Poland winning the freestyle event.  Bryan Lake from the United States won the racing along with Christine Boenniger from Germany.  The 134 riders from 24 different countries made this the biggest PKRA event ever.  The top riders will be sharing €52,000 in prize money.  The Freestyle and Slalom racing was some of the best we have ever seen.

“I think this is the best event in the world and being the best local rider here is amazing”-Mario Rodwald
The trials of the Beetle Kitesurf World Cup had 71 men and 20 women and took over 8 hrs.  14 men and 8 women were selected but many top riders did not make it into the event.  This event really showed how the base of good riders is getting bigger and how the competitors just keep getting better throughout the world.

The main event was absolutely amazing, with 24 men and 12 women riders.  With 3 world champions in the event, Zoon, Hadlow and Langeree and many talented riders like Eudazio DaSilva, the points leader Alex Pastor, the action was none stop.  DaSilva had the best heat score of the event with a 37.23, defeating Hadlow and Langeree in the double elimination.  Christophe Tack made an amazing run in the doubles, competing in 8 consecutive heats.  Marc Jacobs won his first ever PKRA riding with so much power landing perfect front blind mobes and hinterberger mobes.  Alex Pastor lost his first heat of the season, but kept the lead in the overall rankings.  Youri Zoon dislocated his shoulder and will be out for a few weeks.  He will miss Fuerteventura 10 days from now, but should be back for China. Umpierre, Jaspan and Hutter came all the way through the trials to finish 9th.

“The conditions were very similar to home in New Zealand, went big with a lots of power and I am stoked to win my first PKRA”- Marc Jacobs

The women’s fleet was also extremely competitive, with Karolina Winkowska regaining the overall points lead on tour.  Paula Novotna had a great event making a great run in the double to finish 4th.  Bruna Kajiya injured herself; hopefully it is not too serious.  Gisela Pulido could not win her third event in a row and dropped to second in the rankings.  Lammerts, Van Westerop, Lutz and many more had some amazing tricks.  It looks like the new generation of girl’s riders is here.

“It was good event, we had to be patient for the wind, but when we were competing the conditions were very good, I am happy to regain the lead”- Karolina Winkowska

The Slalom displayed some high speed racing with many lead changes and close battles.  Bryan Lake was the fastest rider of the week with Kerneur on his tail the whole time.  The rest of the fleet with riders like Castel, Baumeister, Gruber, Biniash and many more battled hard every race for a chance at the podium.  In the end, it was Lake, Kerneur and Gruber who took the podium.  On the women side Christine Boenniger dominated the whole event winning every race.  Tatiana Sysoeva was second in front of the German Freestyle champion Lutz.

A beautiful closing ceremony was held at the Beetle Kitesurf World Cup, rewarding the athletes with their trophies and Prizes.  This was the best and biggest German PKRA ever and all 134 riders are already looking forward to competing here next year.  The PKRA moves to Fueteventura for the 3rd Slalom stop of the Year and 5th Freestyle event.  Follow us on Twitter and Facebook for the Latest news and results.

US Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year Award Ceremony

Heineken, French Honored at Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year Awards Ceremony

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (February 26, 2013) –  At an emotional ceremony today at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, Johnny Heineken (Larkspur, Calif.) and Jennifer French (St. Petersburg, Fla.) were celebrated as US Sailing’s 2012 Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year.  Formally announced in January after being chosen for their outstanding on-water sailing accomplishments in 2012, the honorees were joined by family, friends, sailing dignitaries, fellow sailors and members of the media for a luncheon program.

The event was emceed by former US Sailing President Gary Jobson and the luncheon included a multi-media retrospective of their rise to the top of the sport. Heineken, the 2012 Kiteboarding Course Racing World Champion, and French, the 2012 Paralympic Silver Medalist in the SKUD-18 class, each gave heartfelt speeches after being awarded specially engraved stainless steel and platinum Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Masters, symbolic of their achievements in excellence, by Rolex Watch U.S.A. President and CEO Stewart Wicht.

I am so honored to be amongst the fantastic sailors who were nominated in 2012 and even more honored to win,” said French.  “It’s a huge move forward for disabled sailing, the only sport where sailors can leave their wheelchairs and prosthetic limbs behind and go out and compete against able-bodied people; that’s why it attracts me.” French took several seconds to leave her own wheelchair to stand during her acceptance speech, utilizing a neuroprosthetic system she helped pioneer after a 1998 snowboarding accident left her a quadriplegic.

French called her Paralympic silver medal performance “a fantastic journey” and said she couldn’t have done it without crew JP Creignou (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and many others who supported them.  “We were standing on their shoulders and fortunate for our outcomes. To gain a silver medal…it was not only an honor to represent Team USA but also an honor to follow in the footsteps of (2005 Rolex Yachtsman) Nick Scandone and his legend as well.” Scandone’s wife, Mary Kate Scandone, had introduced French, saying, “For Jen to achieve her goals as a disabled sailor is amazing.”   Nick Scandone, who died in 2009, won a Paralympic gold medal and was the first-ever disabled sailor named for this award. French is the second.

Heineken took the stage after being introduced by 2011 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year Bill Hardesty, who said, “Johnny has taken kiteboarding to the next level; he makes it look easy.”  In fact, Heineken is a back-to-back kiteboarding course racing world champion (2011, 2012) after spending most of his life windsurfing and sailing. It wasn’t until 2009, that he learned to kiteboard.

“Kiteboarding is an evolution of sailing, not a new sport,” said Heineken, “and the fact that everyone is seeing it that way is pretty special.  I’m amazed to have my name added to a list of sailors I’ve grown up idolizing.”

Heineken said winning one world championship was exciting but it was about “giving it a little more last year to win again” that was especially fulfilling. “Sailing has always been about speed to me,” he said, adding that he started out windsurfing with his father and progressed to racing a 29er in high school.  “I’ve been working with the best guys to stay on top of the game, and I’m fortunate that many of them are from the Bay Area here. We’re seeing the sport take off, on the racing side especially; people are noticing they can go sailing in lighter and lighter conditions and still have fun. Kiteboard course racing is popping up all over in little clusters of local fleets.”

Heineken also gave St. Francis Yacht Club credit for pioneering the running of kiteboarding races locally. This was the second consecutive year that the awards were presented at the St. Francis Yacht Club.

Established in 1961 by US Sailing and sponsored by Rolex Watch, U.S.A. since 1980, US Sailing’s Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year awards are considered the sport’s ultimate recognition of an individual’s outstanding on-the-water achievements for the calendar year.  The process of determining the recipients starts each September when US Sailing invites its membership to make online nominations. A shortlist of nominees is then reviewed by a panel of noted sailing journalists who discuss the merits of each nominee and vote to determine the winners. Over its history the coveted award has been presented to 41 men and 34 women.
