PKRA Lake and Smunty shine on day 2 at MINI kiteboard world cup Mexico

The first day of competition at the MINI Kiteboard World Cup was slow building, but by four in the afternoon the thermal winds had turned on and the slalom was set to start on the Riviera Nayarit. Bryan Lake and Warenka Smunty both won their first finals in spectacular fashion. The heats were close in the beginning but by the end of the day both finals were decided on the last leg of the race. All the riders were happy about the new format and are looking forward to more racing tomorrow in front of the Hard Rock Hotel.

The 22 men ladder was set up so that the top 4 men of the first 4 heats would advance out of the first round, then the top two would advance through the quarters and semis to make a 4 men final. In the first heat of the day the favorites, 2012 world slalom champion Julien Kerneur and Sean Farley both advanced. The next heat Adam Kock and Kevin Langeree also advanced. Kevin was on a twin tip and was perfect on the start but Adam just had more board speed and easily advanced to the next round. Heat 3 Adam Withington and Gunnar Biniasch battled for the lead and Alex Pastor came in third. In Heat 4, the last heat of the round Bryan lake dominated the field and advanced.

The quarter finals had no major upset except for Farley who was disqualified for taking out Basave in the second heat, all the other favorites advanced to the semis where the competition started heating up. The first semifinal Kerneur and Kock easily qualified for the final and had to wait for the very competitive 2nd semifinal to finish. Ramirez and Biniasch gave Lake and Whithington a good run but could not finish in the top two to advance to the final.

The Lake, Kock, Kerneur and Withington final was close right from the start. All four men had perfect starts just a couple of meters apart. Adam Kock took the lead from the start and had to hold off Lake for much of the race, with Bryan trying to cut inside at the marks to try to get a lead. Their kites made contacts a few times but unless you are reckless you can push the limits in Slalom racing. Kerneur had some troubles at the first mark and Whithington capitalized on it to secure a 3rd place finish. Lakes aggressive kiting paid off when he was finally able to take the inside line at the last mark and accelerate to the finish line, Adam held the lead most of the race, but Bryan’s strategy paid off with a win.

The 7 girls had a winner take all race. The girls were a little slow at the start but once the race was underway it was very exciting. Erika was just a couple of meters early and had to be disqualified. Then it was a close battle between Warenka and Arroyo all the way to the last leg when Warenka was able to grab the lead and win the first women heat and final of the day.

Tomorrow the ladders will be a little different with two six men semifinals and one six men final.

Registration Day at the MINI Kiteboard World Cup Mexico

Registration for the MINI kiteboard World Cup took place at the Hard Rock Cafe on the Rivera Nayariton the Mexican Pacific Coast.  The top riders in the world traveled to Mexico to compete in the first Slalom race of the 2013 season.   Slalom is the new high-speed racing discipline that will be making many headlines in 2013. Riders also registered for the freestyle event that will be a combination of old school and wake style tricks.  Kevin Langeree and current freestyle point’s leader Alex Pastor are headlining the freestyle competition and Julien Kerneur the 2012 world slalom champion will be the man to beat in the slalom.

Rivera Nayarit is a great place to kitesurf; a thermal wind picks up every afternoon between 15 to 20 knots.  The Hard Rock Cafe is hosting and sponsoring this event while providing a great atmosphere and perfect venue for the event.  Riders had a chance to test the conditions and are excited about the upcoming races and freestyle competition.

Local rider Sean Farley took Bryan Lake, Kevin, Alex and Julien for a tour of the area in the MINI to check out the surf spots and the atmosphere around Nayarit.  Everyone felt right at home with the relax surf vibe atmosphere and enjoyed the small waves of a dropping south swell.

The competition will begin early afternoon with the sea breeze filling in.  The first slalom event of the year is going to set the tone for the rest of the season and give one rider an early points lead in the rankings for the World Champion title given away at the end of the season. The freestylers will not be battling for their rankings but will be here to display what the best kitesurfers in the world can do.

Caribbean Quest Cabrinha Catamaran Kiteboard trip

Had an amazing time hanging out on the Cabrinha Quest boat in the San Blas Islands a remote archipalego inhabited by the Kuna Indians off Panamas east coast. From there spent a few days in the clear waters of the Turks and Caicos with the Big Blue Unlimited crew. Even got lucky and scored a little swell in both locations!

Boracay Philippine Asian Kiteboard Championship KTA

Here we go then round 3 of our quick-fire start to the KTA Asian Kiteboard Championship Tour. This time it’s back to a favorite haunt in the shape of Boracay Island the Philippines for our 4th event there in as many years.

Boracay Philippine Asian Kiteboard Championship KTA

Boracay Philippine Asian Kiteboard Championship KTA

Registration day takes place on the 26th March with the competition proper then running for the following four days up to the 30th March. The KTA Kite Kids will also be in action to give the now familiar kids power kiting start to the KTA event and this time on home turf for our Kite Kids orgnaiser Kathrin Bordwardt, so we can expect a good turn out over the two days the classes will be running.

With the forecasts improving everyday as we close in on next week’s event the excitement is building for another high level competition that will pick up from where the battles ended only a week ago in Thailand. Last time it was the turn of the Thai riders to have home water advantage, so this time the Philippines crew will for sure be looking to turn the tables. But of course everyone else will be there in the mix too, so no easy rides for anyone – perfect then for the makings of another KTA event to remember.

Key scraps to watch out for then this week – will anyone knock Yo Narapichit Pudla off of his seemingly none stop winning streak in the men’s RB class, can Asian Freestyle Champion Ken Nacor put himself back on top in his home town, how will the Oshima, Oja and Rosa battle play out this time in the women’s Freestyle and will Fon Jantawan Benyapa hold off Kathrin Bordwardt for a second time and take the top Women’s RB slot again. For the TT class it’s all wide open too and everyone will be watching to see if the new Chinese talent that emerged in Thailand can take that one step up this time to the top of the podium.

Its Easter week and it’s going to be crazy anyway on the island, so we are all hoping to see the crowds on the beach each day as they recover from their various nights out to cheer everything and everyone along. With Bulabog beach things are always close up and personal so it’s great one to be part of so if you are there come along and join us at the beautiful beach front at the Aqua Boracay by Yoo who are once again out hosts sponsors for the KTA event. So a big thank you goes out to the Marco’s for their continued support and we look forward to our week there with you.

Thank you also to all the other tour, local sponsors and partners who have stepped in to help the KTA Philippines take place, we know it’s a busy holiday time for you all so your support it very much appreciated.

So let’s do this and make it  good one

Saba Rock Caribbean Kiteboard trip

This year we hooked up with Saba Rock Island Resort for one of the best trips the team has ever been on. Nestled in the middle of the Caribbean with a ton of island flavor and recognized as one of the top sailing destinations in the world, this beautiful back drop was the perfect place for our annual photo shoot. A place where people walk with a swagger and the pace is slow, you can find one crystal clear, turquoise set up after another in smooth flat water or nice easy waves.
