Quality and durability, like no other, is what Slingshot kites and RBS battens is separately know for. So what happens when you combine the two? The result is the technical high performance minded 2006 Octane kite.
The NEW 2006 Slingshot Octane is the only dedicated 5 line kite on the market today that enables the rider to obtain 100% de-power. The Octane is designed for kiteboarders focused on competition, big air and who value technical features. This kite can be used in all conditions. The Octanes Phantom Power provides the rider with increased board speed, maximum kite efficiency and reduced bar pressure without the stress of having to edge the board and drive the kite forward in the window. This is the most advanced kite in the market with the highest performance for extended hang time and incredible range.
One of the most important features to this kite is the concept of Phantom Power. Phantom Power is achieved when your kite is positioned forward in the window, you are barely edging with your board but somehow shooting upwind. This may sound contradictory but one of the technological features that makes Phantom Power possible is Slingshot’s patent pending Splitflex technology. Splitflex is a result of the combination of inflated Splitstruts and RBS battens.
Battens, in general, are used in many different capacities to achieve a flexible yet controlled shape. The Octane also uses RBS battens as the Leading Edge Cam Battens to maintain the canopy profile in gusty conditions.
Are all battens created equal? The answer is NO. The Slingshot Octane is the only kite on the market that uses RBS battens.
Without getting all techy RBS battens are the only battens that are an Epoxy “E-Glass” roll form batten. They also use a proprietary resin matrix that contributes to the overall strength and versatility of the batten. In short RBS battens:
are more durable and flexible
allow for tapering which enhances performance
have a thinner profile
DO NOT BREAK!
The flipside to this story is the polyester pulltruded rod batten. Other kites from other companies are using this technology. Point for point there is very little to compare. The polyester pulltruded rod battens:
have a high glass content which means explosive breakage
is very brittle and shatters easily
is not flexible, characteristic is more like an on/off switch
weaken in stength when coated
Airtime Kite in Hood River is most familiar with kites repairs of every nature. They describe the replacement of an uncoated broken polyester pulltruded batten as VERY MESSY and expensive. Because of the high glass content it breaks into a million tiny splinters and is very difficult to negotiate. Airtime has also noted that they have not had to replace a single RBS batten to date.

RBS offers two different types of battens. Our epoxy “E-Glass” battens and our T-700 “Carbon Bar” Battens.
Epoxy “E-Glass” Battens: Our stock of Epoxy “E-Glass” battens are constructed using unidirectional ‘E’ glass fibers in a unique proprietary pulform process in which all fibers are pre-tensioned and aligned during the impregnation process using our specially formulated flexible epoxy resin matrix.
This unique manufacturing technique makes for an extremely durable, virtually unbreakable batten that can be tapered down to .025″ less then 1mm on our custom CNC machine, creating an extremely soft tip on our leech battens without the fear of breaking.
The RBS range of ‘E’ glass battens consists of four widths; 10,15,19 and 25mm with a variety of different thicknesses and lengths to choose from.
T-700 “Carbon Bar” Battens: Our T-700 “Carbon Bar” batten is constructed using the same unique process as our ‘E’ glass battens using a very high modulus (18 million) aircraft grade 700 series carbon fiber for maximum stiffness for the cost.
Produced with our proprietary flexible epoxy resin matrix, this makes for a very durable, strong and very stiff batten proven in the Southern Ocean on the fleet of the recent Volvo Ocean Race including the winner Illbruck.
The T-700 batten is offered in six widths 10,15,19,25,32 and 36mm in a variety of different thicknesses and lengths to choose from.
