After races in Oman, China, Turkey and Portugal the Extreme Sailing Series came to Great Britain, making its Welsh debut in the stunning Cardiff Bay. Getting in on the act with the Red Bull Sailing Team was kitesurfing’s Master of Extreme Ruben Lenten.
Ruben was taken for a ride around Cardiff Bay by double Olympic gold medallists Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher. The Austrian duo were ably assisted by the rest of their Red Bull Sailing Team crew, Graeme Spence (AUS), Matt Adams (UK) and Pierre LeClainche (FRA).
Ruben fixed his kiteboard to the Extreme 40 catamaran as his new crew-mates took him for a spin around Cardiff Bay. The impressive vessel measures 20 metres by 14 metres and can reach speeds of up to 75km/h.
“I’m always trying to build on my tricks and take the sport to the next level and it’s been a dream of mine to kite next to Roman Hagara. It was absolutely unreal!”
Inside the catamaran Roman Hagara was taking special care not to collide with Ruben as he pulled off his stunts.
“It was a fun experience. We had to take care a lot not to sail over Ruben. His tricks are crazy and we are looking forward to the next shooting.”
After stunning the crowd with Ruben’s display the Red Bull Sailing Team then put on their own impressive performance. Roman’s crew sat on top of the leaderboard after the first day’s action in Cardiff.
However, the eventual winners in Wales were the crew of Oman Air as the Red Bull Sailing Team had to settle for third place after four days of competition.
