When you think about South Africa, you think first at Aaron Hadlow. Since the beginning, Aaron (and his buddy Ruben) made of this place his home winter spot, and he made it famous.
Insane megaloops, first 900 ever, crazy videos... This place is definitely the Aaron place, so nothing more normal to ask him some questions about it. And, don't miss the last question... The scoop of the year !!!
South Africa is known for these extreme conditions, but all pro riders, in the winter, go there, can you tell me why ?
The winds in Cape Town are pretty extreme and it's a challenging place to ride, over the years I have seen more and more pro riders spend the summer here and most come back year after year.
I think people come for more than just the conditions, it is consistently windy, lots of different spots and there are few places in the world that are harder to ride but the lifestyle surrounding the city is also lots of fun.
If you can ride well here you are likely to do well in most other places so obviously good for many riders on tour.
What's is your favorite spot in SA ?
My favourite spot when it's at its best is Big Bay but to be honest the only time I ride there is when it is out of season before or after the crowds arrive.
Most of the time I just ride off the main beach in Table View where there is a bit of space, I love riding in the waves using them as kickers, that makes up half of my vocabulary of tricks now days and is where I can innovate, progress and express my riding. On the inside there is flat sections and you have pressure to land those tricks because once your kite goes down it is often swept to shore in the shore break.
What about the nightlife ?
Nightlife is good in town, a bit commercial sometimes but fun on the right night in the right place. A good crew makes a good night.
So, Aaron, everybody is waiting for this : when are you back in the competition tour ?!!!
I'm planning to come back on tour this year at some point, although at the moment as I write this it depends on a couple of things before I can be certain.
